Lula and Dilma multiplied the number of jobs in the shipbuilding industry by 26

The demands from Petrobras were responsible for the huge improvement in the shipbuilding industry and for the economic development of different regions in the country. With this new push, the sector, which under the neoliberal government employed only 3000 workers, today employs 26 times that number, 78,000 workers. Another 25,000 new jobs will be generated over the next three years according to estimates by the National Union for the Offshore Construction and Maintenance Industry (Sinval).

More Ships, Platforms, Drill Rigs And Support Ships

Petrobras will invest US$100 in the Brazilian shipbuilding industry by 2020. The number of orders will total 28 drillships (floating drilling platforms), 49 ships and 146 support ships. Also, 38 platforms will be contracted for production that will contribute to increase production to 4.2 million barrels per day, in addition to the platforms for Libra and for the areas contracted directly with Petrobras for the production of the surplus in the assignment of rights areas (Búzios, Entorno de Iara, Florin and Nordeste de Tupi).

Positive impact on 18 sectors of the economy

The increase in the production of oil will have an impact on 18 sectors in the areas of materials and services - such as pipes, nautical equipment, electrical equipment, mechanical and underwater equipment installations and industrial assembly, construction, maintenance and naval repair, etc. - increasing the number of large, medium and small companies associated with the production chain and generating employment.

The National Petroleum Industry Organization (Onip) already has 2500 associated companies: of these, more than half are micro or small companies. The increase in the production of petroleum also attracts British, Chinese, United States, Spanish, Dutch and French companies, among others, who will invest in capital goods infrastructure and petrochemicals.

Small companies, great opportunities

The Micro and Small Companies segments (MPE) will be particularly benefited. More than 8000 small sized companies have already been identified as potential or effective suppliers based on a survey carried out by Sebrae and Petrobras. The agreement between the two organizations encourages the creation of state networks for cooperation among companies, in order to increase competitiveness of the companies that are supplying goods and services to the petroleum and natural gas supply chain. Approximately 6300 companies have been invited to participate in training activities, seminars, consultancies and business rounds.
