Also in Embrapa’s portfolio are innovative research projects into bioenergy, such as 2nd generation ethanol (deriving from bagasse and sugarcane straw), technologies for the restructuring of agricultural/livestock activities in dry periods and development of varieties plants genetically resistant to pests.

Among the most notable achievements of the state company was cloning the heifer Victoria, the first bovine clone in Latin America in 2001, the sequencing of the coffee genome and the development of a bean resistant to the golden mosaic virus, both in 2011.

here was a time when the cerrado (savannah lands) was irrelevant to national agribusiness. It served "only to stay away at a distance," as the people said. The scenario began to change as of the 1970s, and today, the cerrado accounts for 48.5% of farm production in the country, thanks to technologies for correcting soil acidity and the adaptation of plants from other biomes to the region.

The Agricultural and Livestock Plan 2014/2015 calls for R$ 1.7 billion to be made available to farmers within the Program for Agricultural Production Innovation Incentives (Inovagro), at a subsidized interest rate of 4% per year. Producers can obtain up to R$ 1 million individually. The range of eligible items includes assistance such as consulting services to purchase machinery and equipment designed to implement innovation and adoption of new technologies.

Gross output of the Brazilian dairy farm segment in 2013 was R$ 22.9 billion, contributing mainly to the economies of small and medium-sized cities. According to the latest agricultural census (IBGE, 2006), 5.2 million farms exist in Brazil, of which 25% (approximately 1.35 million) produce milk, involving about 5 million people.

Brazil has posted excellent results in the beef cattle segment. In 2013, the gross value of beef production was R$ 51.1 billion, second only to soybeans.  Meat production chain turnover is some R$ 167.5 billion a year, generating about 7 million jobs. Exports are up every year, and are shipped to an increasing number of markets. In 2012, Brazil exported to 142 countries.

Marketing support is one of the actions that stimulate agribusiness, with the Federal government defining the minimum price for purchases, price equalization or financing operations. Federal government acquisition (AGF) is another tool for ensuring minimum price guarantees for farmers or cooperatives, through direct government purchases, provided the products are properly stored in locations registered by the National Supply Company (Conab). These purchases became part of the public stock.

Medium-sized farms are especially benefited through the Harvest Plan 2014/2015. The supply of funds for investments, expenses and marketing increased 26.5% compared to the previous plan, now reaching R$ 16.7 billion. The main sources of financing are the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), rural savings accounts through Banco do Brasil and Constitutional Financing Funds.

To guarantee crops, the Plan also prioritizes investments in storage infrastructure through the newly created Warehouse Expansion and Construction Program (PCA). The plan makes available some R$ 3.5 billion in credit to expand farm storage capacity. The PCA also finances storage units in urban areas, to facilitate logistics and improve freight transportation.
