There are no handouts. The Bolsa Família is a conditional income/cash transfer program. This means that to qualify for benefits, one must meet conditions, such as keeping children in school. Plus, every R$ 1 invested in the Bolsa Família program has a direct return of R$ 1.78 in the gross domestic product (GDP). Thanks to these benefits, the GDP grew by R$ 41 billion in 2013. The Bolsa Família money boosts the purchasing power of beneficiaries. Buying more, the beneficiaries drive growth of commerce, which in turn encourages industry to produce more, heating up the economy and creating jobs. In other words, the Bolsa Família is good not only for the recipient, but also for Brazil and Brazilians in general.
